Predictability
Predictability, or knowing what to expect, is an important feature of children’s early development. Predictable routines offer children a sense of security and stability, giving them the confidence to explore the world around them and develop new skills.
Predictable routines help children to:
- Feel safe, secure, and comfortable
- Know what is happening now and what comes next
- Feel in control of their environment
- Carry out an activity or task
- Engage in learning
- Extend thinking and problem-solving skills
- Make daily transitions
- Build independence and autonomy
Everyday routines are full of learning opportunities for young children, teaching them essential life skills such as self-care, managing personal hygiene, organising their belongings, and transitioning from one part of the day to another. Through repetition and following a structured sequence of events, children gain an understanding of time concepts (first, next, before, after), and gradually build independence in completing routines by themselves. As children gain independence within routines, their confidence and self-esteem flourish.
